Rough Riders Drill Team
Poker Ride
This was our third year riding at this poker ride (Pat's first
time).
It was a beautiful fall day in the Owyhees, and we had a good ride!
A nice breeze kept the bugs at bay most of the day, and it was not too hot, not
too cold.
This year they added a little bit extra in the form of challenges at each stop.
This made it a little more interesting (and showed us where we need to work more
with our horses!)
Riders coming in
I didn't get pictures of the first challenge: back your
horse in a figure 8 around two cones.
(Cardeen said "I'm an ex racehorse, racehorses don't back up" - something I need
to work on!)
On the way to the first stop
Evelyn and Gunner (and a tag along dog on his 2nd or 3rd trip around)
Bob
Pat and Folly
Tracy and her daughter (also from IMO)
Check point #1
The challenge: ride across (or around) a tarp with an
egg on a spoon
(we found out the eggs were hard boiled so they could be used again even if they
were dropped)
Check point #2
The challenge: ride up and pick a flower
Robin and Cardeen
Evelyn and Gunner
Pat and Folly (Folly wanted to eat the flowers - didn't we say "stop and eat the
flowers"?)
Check point #3
The challenge: weave in and out of the cones with a tennis ball
under your chin
Check point #4
The challenge: ride between the chairs with the scary pumpkin and
the scary gorilla
(I think that originally it was to side-pass, but it took too long so they
changed it)
Folly didn't have any problem (this was only his 4th ride out of an arena, and
he did great the whole day!)
and back to camp for lunch and raffle prizes (and winning hands... but we never
get those)
